Re: Douglass Elementary School
Dear Mr. Bussinger:

Regarding the type of fuel oi1 to be used at the Douglass
School, the matter was discussed at the tine the plans
were drawn and it was decided to design the heating plant
to use No. 5 oi1. The difference in cost in Arlington
between No. 5 and No. 6 oils is L.6 cents a gallon whereas
the difference here between No. 2 and No. 6 oils is 5.6
cents a ga11on. We never design a school for No. 2 ol1.
It is considered good engineering practice for schools
the size of Dougl-ass to use No. 5 oilr and schools the size
of a high school to use No. 6 oi1. The reason for this
is that the use of No.6 oi1 requires pre-heating equipment, controls and a larger tank. It costs about $5rOOO
more for the original installation.
It also takes a more
skilled pe rson to operate with No. 6 oi1 than wit h No. 5.
In one case, the Merrifield High School, we designed for
No. 6 oll" but because of the greater ease of operation,
they have always used No. 5. It was these considerations
which Led to the decision on No. 5 oi]- at the tirne the
building was planned.

If you have other questions on it,
into it further with you.

I wl11 be glad to

Very truly yours,

Re: Douglass Elementary School
Dear Mr. Bussinger:
The plurnbing layout for the back wing of the Douglass
Elementary School has been revised to drain to the back,
and we come up with an invert elevation of 29?.O at the
back wa11 of the school. This will alloru us anple fa11
into a sewer at the rear of the school even if the public
seftrer is lald on top of the ground in the present stream
bed. The city engineers, however, will probably want to
lower the sewer a foot or so to get adequate cover over
it" with our fif1.

In suryeying for this public sewer, they should check the
grades all the way up from the existing sewer. As mentioned in your office, there appears to be a discrepancy
in the reference points used. The invert elevation at
the last existing manhole as sbown on the sketch in your
office was higher than the elevation of the ground in back
of the school, and it would have to be lower for the
sewer to work. The elevations on our drawings were taken
fron the survey nade by Robert K. Wilson.
