Mre. James H. Raby
626 N. Partick St,.
Alexandria, Virginia

Deer Mr. Haby:

At the meeting of the County §ehool Board on December 12 an order was

entered authorizing the employment of en edditional teacher at Mlddleburg

Colored School end the peyment of & reasonable rental for suitable guarters
1f such could be foukd. A committe representing the Ps T. As came to our
meeting and they are trying to assist us in finding & place in whikh to
carry on the work temporarily. The senses of the school Board is that a
new school she@ddd be provided for about 160 children around Ste. Louls and
Middleburg at Middleburg snd I hope thet such a building of modern type can

be provided.

We already have one school closed for lack of a teacher and we have
no ceidfinty that we cen find someone for the position at Middleburg but
it would seem a more desirable location and 1t should be possible to find

a teacher,

The aofioow_dowaa oObawnomcg the request for transportation for certailn
patrons but took no action because they had no facllitles with which to
take care of this area. x

I might point out that our school board has had in effect for & number
of years this policy: wheneyws a school wes closed transportation was pro-
vided by bus for the school area and as many chlldren in nearby areas were
accommodated as the bus could includes That has applied uniformly to white
and colored children. The main difference fe that only four colored
schools haeve been closed under this conditiocn and many more white schools
have been closed, Many of the persons of this County cleimed thet this wes
u»ucupaawshmw against them in the case of closing thelir schools Ve have a
mmber of a m both white and colored whildren are rather .far from school.
The school board has adopted a provision that 1t will assist financially with
the trensportation in these areas but that it should be necessary for the
parents to errange for the transportation. We are making these payments Ly
way of mssistance in several areas to both white and colored patrons.

g &
I bslieve that it is sefe for me to assure you that the §ghool wwfina of
Loudoun has every desire to improve the conditions for the education of the
colored children of this Countye

I note in your letter some reference as to whaet wes being consldered for
a school at our meeting at Aldle. This school burned during the summer and
the school board hes decided not to revuild it. They had under consideration

facilities in an area where bGiee were formerly five twoe-room schools, three
