STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION
RICHMOND, 16
June 29, 1956
Mr. O. L. Emerick, Superintendent
Loudoun County Public Schools
Leesburg, Virginia
Dear Mr. Emerick:
By constitutional law we are prohibited from granting scholarship loans
to students in sectarian colleges. We are unofficially advised that the
church-related colleges in Virginia (and that means 17 of the 21 private,
degree-granting colleges) will be considered sectarian. Since Bridge-
water is definitely a church-related college, we assume that its students
cannot any longer participate in the scholarship program.
We are awaiting an offficial clessification from the Attorney (teneral, but
we are reasonably sure thet there are only four accredited, degree-
grenting, privete colleges in Virginia which will be declared non-
sectarian.
With every good wish, I am
Sincerely yours,
