The pressure of growing population in our modern world has created a unique
problem-a shortage of space. To paraphrase Malthus, the lgth century
English economist: "Population tends to increase geometrically while space
remains relatively constant. "
Almost every American institution and industry today faces the problem of
where to put necessary facilities for the people who work, play or learn in their
buildings. This problem becomes particularly acute when the question of seating arises.
And where is this problem more serious than in our schools where the school
population has increased so rapidly that appropriations and building programs for schools cannot keep up with it. The big question for schools is:
"where do we get space?" and particularly: "where do we get space for large
assembly areas such as auditoriums, gyms or cafeterias?"
The old facilities are obviously inadequate

With conventional tables and seating
arrangements a room is practically
limited to a single function. Think of
the economy and convenience if this
lunch room could be instantly converted to a gymnasium.

This is a "Noise Jungle." Because of
the serious overcrowding in this limited space, noise and confusion reign.
The great amount of space that these
conventional tables and chairs take
up means that the children are crowded and uncomfortable. And there
probably is not room for all to eat at
once.

Here is a problem in economy. One or
more men will have to work a long,
long time to clean up this lunchroom.

Multi-use of space is very simply the
use of a given area for two, three or
more purposes. A normal combination
is the use of one large area in a school
for a gymnasium and a lunch room.

The use of a given area for both eating and another function presents a
problem in mobility. Fixed tables and
chairscannot be cleared awayand easily

transported or stored to make room
for other activities. Many solutions to
the problem have been offered.

This type of table that folds into the wall answered some of the needs. But it was found
basically impractical because it violated one
of the first principles of multi-use-architectural freedom. This table limited construction. Windows had to be small and placed
high to allow room for the tables. No modern,
large glass windows were possible with this
type of arrangement. Besides, much space
was wasted. This system provided for only
peripheral seating. The center of the room
was lost. Finally, the cost of installation was
very high, since these tables had to be a part
of the actual architecture. Of course, to install these tables after a building had been
built was almost impossible because of the
prohibitive cost.

Here is another table that attempted
to answer the problem. lt, too, was
found impractical because it violated
another tenet of multi-use. lt took too
much time and effort to collapse and
remove this type of table. Too much
conversion time destroys much of the
value the area was thought to contain.
Besides, these tables were so heavy
and folded so awkwardly that it often
took more than one man to convert
them. And they were dangerous to
operate and difficult to keep clean.
