Dave,
In the colored petition 2.5.A Yr Unk County Wide League Peititon asking for acceptance of the
Gibbons Lot for the "colored" high school is the name Walter E. Williams, Minister, Methodist
Church (colored). Unfortunately, the papers don't clear note the year of the petition nor the city
Williams lived in.
My thought is that if you can figure out when Williams served as a Minister and where, the church
(if it still stands) might have records nailing down the date of the petition.
Here is some history to help. During the late 1930s the black community in Loudoun County
organized fundraiser events to purchase 8 acres (3.2 ha) of land on the east side of Leesburg from
W.S. Gibbons. The property was conveyed to Loudoun County for $1 on December 16, 1940.
In other words, the petition was done between when the Gibbons lot was made available and
when it was sold to Loudoun.
Note. Gibbons is spelled Gibons in the petition.
Thanks. Hope you can solve this mystery.
