5.3 Field Trips

Example of a "Split" of Field Trips we Extracted from the files.

Common Glory, 1947.  Common Glory was a play about Jamestown and 1947 was the opening season.  More than 90,000 people saw The Common Glory on opening day.  Trips to Williamsburg in August 1947 and 19 July 1948 were for white children.  “Colored” children went on 22 July 1948.

Field Trips: for African Americans.  Memos related to requests by African-Americans to travel on field trips by bus.

  • March 24, 1953, Carver Elementary asked to use two buses to take grades 2-4 to the Zoo on June 2nd or 3rd.    Carver agreed to pay for gas and drivers. (see also 12.3 Transportation folder for 1947-51).  
  • June, 1953,  Conklin Colored School visit to zoo.[1]
  • March 26, 1953:  Douglass Elementary wanted to use a school bus for a trip to Mount Vernon on May 22.
  • April 13, 1953.  Douglass High School’s French club wanted to send thirty members to Washington on May 13 for an educational trip.
  • April 13, 1953.  Douglass High School’s Student Patrol wanted to charter[2] a bus for May 16 to go to the State-wide Patrol game in Washington.
  • April 17, 1953.   Banneker School asked to use Bus 32 to take students and teachers to a ball game to which the members of the Safety Patrol “are admitted free.”
  • April 17, 1953.  Emerick approved the use of a bus for the French Club at Dulles but denied a request to use the bus for a baseball trip, which he considered to be about entertainment.  He also felt that the whole county would want to do the same thing.
  • April 20, 1953.  Emerick was informed that the trip for grades 5,6,7, and 8 should be on May 12 or 13 because of the possibility of rain.    The purpose was a “general tour of Washington, i.e. the airport, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Union Station, etc.”  They then intended to have lunch at “the museum” and a tour of that building.
  • April 23, 1953.  Carver School wanted to secure a third bus for Miss Melbourne’s class to Washington at the same time as classes of Mrs. Daniel, Mrs Barrett and Miss John (June 2 or 3).   Emerick responded on April 24 that an additional bus was not possible, nor was redistribution of the bus used by Douglass.
  • April 27, 1953.  Bull Run School was invited to take part in the May Day exercises at Douglass Elementary on May 14, 1953, so asked for permission to use a bus. Emerick responded with approval on May 2nd; but with many conditions on the route and cost.
  • May 28, 1953  Douglass Elementary trip to Mt Vernon[3]
  • May 14, 1953.  Emerick notified Nannie Coles that Nokes will be closed the following year and a school bus operated to take the children to the new school near Herndon.”

  • Petition.  Request from Round Hill H.S. 4/5/1928 to take half a day to attend Apple Blossom Festival.  White Petition Box.
  • Aldie High School Trip May, 1953 for basketball games[1]
  • Arcola School. March 1953 for School Patrol Parade in Washington DC[2]
  • Ashburn White and Mountain Gap White, April 1953.  For trips to Leesburg school and Washington DC, Pan Am Building.[3]
  • Leesburg HS trip to Aldie, April 1953 for basketball[4] and Washington, DC
  • Lovettsville HS.  1953 Trip to Leesburg to study Loudoun County Government.[5]
  • Lucketts School.  1953 Trips to Mt Vernon and Wash DC for Zoo and TV Show.[6]
  • Round Hill, 1953  From Round Hill to Hamilton and Back.  May Day exercises[7]
