5.9 Reduction in Class Hours

For reasons yet to be determined, the administration sometimes reduced school hours by half, which must have had a deleterious impact on education.  We do know that in Saint Louis, classes were overcrowded, so before Banneker was constructed, students spent only half a day in order to use the space more effectively.

  • 1929.   Cool Spring.   Patrons resented the reduction in school hours and wanted day returned to full-time for AY 1929/30.   See White Petition Box, 2.5.A.
  • 1930.  Paxon.   Mrs. Parks was prepared to accept a half day if a full day was impossible to achieve, that being better than closing the school.  White Petition Box 2.5.A.
  • 1930.   Sycoline parents don’t want their kids to be relegated to a half day of school.  If Sycoline can’t be a full day in AY 1930, they want kids to be sent where a full day is guaranteed. 2.5.A.
  • 1932    Sycoline, dissatisfied with education when limited to half a day and want kids transferred to a full-time school like Leesburg in AY 1932. 2.5.A.
