REGION I of STATE SUPERINTENDENT'S ADVISCRY COUNC IL
DECEMBER 14, 1955

TO: Superintendents of Schools, and Editors of Virginia Weekly Newspapers
Addressed

At the direction of the Superintendents of Schools in Region I the follow-
ing resolution is being sent to all Superintendents of Schools in the State for
their information and use as they see fit, and released to all Virginia Weekly
newspapers for publication. .
There are seventeen school divisions in this area. Superintendents from
twelve of the divisions were present at a meeting in Farmville, Virginia,
December 12, 1955 and adopted unanimously the following resolution:
"We, the Superintendents of School Divisions in Region One of the State
Superintendent's Advisory Council, which also includes District D and a part of
District C of the Virginia Education Association, in regular session December
12, 1955, hereby record ourselves as being in fayor of the Limited Constitutional
Convention to ammend Section 141 of -the Constitution of Virginia and urge the
citizens of Virginia to support and vote for this Limited Constitutional Con-
vention because we are convinced that this action is essential to the preser-
vation of the Virginia Public School System.
"The proposed ammendment, as well as Section 67 of the Constitution of
Virginia, definitely prohibits the use of public funds in sectarian schools and
firmly maintains the accepted principle of the !Separation of church and state!.
"We are further convinced that the General Assembly of Virginia is ded-
icated, as indicated by their action and through published statements of their
individual members,to the preservation of the Public School System of Virginia -
and to the continuance of the essential aspects of the Compulsory School Atten— !
dance Law", . ' ‘
