Conklin must refer to village, not school, as the Conklin school was colored. There was McGraw’s Ridge school and white kids who needed HS.

Dear friends,
The following is partial list of African-American Bus drivers and their routes. Could you let me know if you remember them and if any
are still alive? If you took these routes, do you remember them? Do you have a photo of any of the drivers?

Bus 2 was a 1940 Chevrolet Hackney, changed in 1956/57, according to the 1951-57 file. Might have been rented.
Bus 16 was a 1946 Ford Hackney, Junked October, 1955, according to the 1951/57 folder. In 1945/46, it was a 1936
Chevrolet Hackney, which had been reserved for white students 1941/42 to 1944/45. The records for 1955/56 indicate that
this bus was then a 1955 International, which went from Rock Hill to Willisville, Banneker, Carver and Douglass.
Bus 21 was a 1944 Ford Thomas, according to the 1951-57 file and Junked October, 1955. It seems that in 1955, the Bus
was used for white schools route from North For and Woodburn to Lincoln and was a 1955 International.
Bus 24 was a 1950 Chevrolet Wayne, according to the 1951-57 file which was changed in 1953. The records for 1955/56
indicate that Bus 24 was a 1952 Chevrolet, which serviced Lucketts, Ashburn, Broad Run Bridge to Douglass Schools.
Bus 26 was a 1954 Chevrolet Wayne in our records; but there must have been earlier version. The same number was also
assigned to a 1950 Chrevolet Wayne which was replaced in 1955 as Bus 32. The 1955 records indicate that Bus 26 went
from Aldie to Middleburg on a Relay route to Douglass and was then a 1954 Chevrolet. From 1941/42 to 1945/46, it was a
1941 Chevrolet Hackney used exclusively for African-American transportation.
Bus 30 Was a 1953 GMS Wayner. In 1955, this bus was 1953 GMC which went from Hillsboro and Round Hill to Carver and
Douglass.
Bus 32 May have been a 1952 Chevrolet Wayne, replaced in 1955 as Bus 39. In 1955 Bus 32 was then an older 1950
Chevrolet, which went from Middleburg to Banneker.
Bus 33 was a 1946 Ford Hackney, which apparently became Bus 35 in 1956. The 1955 records indicate the same bus was
being used on a route from Scotland Heights, Bluemont and Philomont to Carver.
Bus 34 was a 1947 Ford Hackney
Bus 35. In 1955 this was a 1947 Ford which went from Conklin, Willard and Sterling to Oak Grove.
Bus 36 was in 1955 a 1947 Ford Hackey, which went from Watson to Douglass.
Bus 40 was in 1955 a 1951 Chevrolet which went from Lovettsville to Waterford and Douglass Schools.
Bus 51 was in in 1955 a 1944 Ford which went from Middleburg to Banneker.
